When might you need a BS5837 survey?
Trees on or near a site can affect the layout and construction of an extension, new building, driveway or other development.
A BS5837 survey records the relevant trees and identifies constraints that should inform the design. Involving an arboricultural consultant before the layout is fixed can help identify potential conflicts while changes are easier to make.
Trees on neighbouring land may also be relevant where their canopies or roots could be affected by the proposals.

The survey and tree constraints plan
We inspect and record the relevant trees, including their species, dimensions, condition and retention categories.
The survey information is used to prepare a tree constraints plan showing features such as canopy spreads and root protection areas. This helps your design team understand the space needed around the trees when developing the proposals.
A suitable base plan is needed to prepare the drawings. We will confirm what is required and whether the information you already have is sufficient.
Arboricultural Impact Assessment
An Arboricultural Impact Assessment, or AIA, examines how the proposed development would affect the trees.
It considers potential conflicts between the layout, construction activities and trees proposed for retention. It explains proposed tree removals or pruning, where relevant, and identifies design changes or mitigation measures that could reduce adverse effects.
The assessment is based on the proposals supplied. Changes to the design may require the assessment and accompanying plans to be updated.
Arboricultural Method Statement
An Arboricultural Method Statement, or AMS, explains how work near retained trees should be carried out.
Depending on the project, it may address construction access, excavation, demolition, ground protection, material storage and the sequence of operations. Any requirements for arboricultural supervision or monitoring should be identified within the agreed scope.
It provides practical instructions for the people carrying out the work.
Tree Protection Plan
A Tree Protection Plan, or TPP, shows the protection measures needed for retained trees during the project.
These may include protective barriers, ground protection and areas where construction activity must be restricted. The drawing should be read alongside the relevant assessment and method statement.
Jones Arboriculture provides the professional advice and drawings; installation of fencing or other physical protection is not included.
