When is a tree condition survey useful?
You may need a survey because you have noticed a change in a tree, received a request from a property manager or insurer, or want to establish a planned approach to managing the trees on your land.
Surveys can be arranged as a one-off inspection or as part of a planned inspection programme. For clients managing several properties or sites, we can agree a scope that helps prioritise recommendations and plan future inspections across the portfolio.
Common reasons include:
- Visible decay, cavities, fungal growth or damaged branches.
- Changes following strong winds or nearby building work.
- Trees beside buildings, paths, play areas or parking spaces.
- Taking responsibility for a property or site with existing trees.
- Reviewing previous recommendations and planning future maintenance.

What the inspection covers
We inspect the agreed trees from ground level, looking at their health, structural condition and surroundings. This includes visible defects, signs of decay and the relationship between the trees and areas used by people.
Where appropriate, a sounding mallet or probe can help investigate suspected cavities or decay. If the visual inspection identifies a need for additional assessment, we explain the reasons and agree the next steps with you.
The scope is confirmed before the visit, including which trees are included and any access requirements.
What you receive
Your written report sets out:
- The trees inspected and the relevant findings.
- Recommended work or other management measures.
- Priorities and suggested timescales.
- Advice on monitoring and future inspections.
- Any limitations or need for further investigation.
Recommendations are proportionate to the findings and how the site is used. An inspection does not automatically mean that pruning or removal is needed.
If we identify an urgent concern during the visit, we raise it promptly.

How often should trees be inspected?
There is no single interval suitable for every tree or site. We recommend an approach based on the findings, the surroundings and how the site is used.
Will the survey establish whether a tree is completely safe?
No inspection can guarantee that a tree will never fail. The assessment records its observable condition at the time of the visit, identifies relevant concerns and recommends proportionate action.
Is Resistograph testing included?
Specialist decay investigation is agreed separately where needed. It is not a routine requirement for every tree condition survey.
How quickly can I receive the report?
We agree the visit and reporting dates before you book. Quick turnarounds are available where possible; include any deadline with your enquiry.
