When might further investigation help?
A tree inspection may identify a cavity, fungal growth or another defect that needs closer assessment before a management decision can be made.
Further investigation can help where a visual inspection alone leaves important questions about the condition of the wood. It may also be recommended in an existing tree report.
Testing is only recommended where it can provide useful information. Not every tree with a cavity or signs of decay requires Resistograph testing.
What does Resistograph testing involve?
A Resistograph uses a fine drilling needle to measure resistance as it passes through the wood. Changes in the recorded resistance can help identify areas of decay or cavities along the drilling path.
Testing focuses on the area requiring investigation. The results are considered alongside the visual inspection, the tree’s structure and the surrounding site.
The equipment provides information to support professional judgement. It does not produce a simple pass or fail result for the whole tree.
Understanding the findings
Each reading relates to a particular drilling path. It does not provide a complete picture of every part of the tree or establish the condition of its entire root system.
We explain what the investigation has shown, what remains uncertain and whether any further assessment is justified. No inspection or test can guarantee that a tree is completely safe.
Finding decay does not automatically mean a tree needs pruning or removal. Recommendations are proportionate to the findings and take account of nearby people, property and how the site is used.
What will you receive?
A written report explaining:
- The reason for the investigation and the areas assessed.
- Relevant inspection findings and the interpretation of any testing.
- The limitations of the assessment.
- Practical recommendations, with priorities and timescales where action is needed.
- Advice on monitoring, future inspection or further assessment where appropriate.
